Myanmar is currently producing 3,000 megawatts, and planning to produce another 3,000 megawatts, while building a new 500 kV power grid network.
U Win Khaing, Minister for the Ministry of Electricity and Energy, vowed to double the electricity production in Myanmar within the next three years, at the meeting with local business leaders.
‘‘We will do all the necessary things to double our electricity production, and to increase distribution. We are considering everything from producing, distributing, and using electricity,’’ he said.

A Committee for Electricity and Energy Development organized by businessmen is working with the government, and also presented the challenges and difficulties in electricity and energy to the government.
‘‘We have plans to form an organization like a think tank under the name ‘Myanmar International Institute for Energy and Electricity’ with experts from governments, international and locals to get accurate and complete data. We also have plans to establish Think Tank International Center,’’ U Ye Min Aung, president of the committee, said.
The business leaders presented their needs and challenges to the government. Those needs included, an upgrade for the power station at Myingyan Industrial Zone, access to stable and high voltage electricity, installation of additional transformers — because SMEs in industrial zones don’t have enough electricity— considering a proposal for a waste-to-energy power plant, and the issue of the electricity production firms in the country not talking with industrial zones.
