Throughout history Malaria has killed more people than any other disease. Tragically even today, Malaria still kills a child every second minute.
In Asia the number of cases and deaths has halved in the last 15 years, however this doesn’t mean we can rest on our laurels. If anything there is more work than ever. While Malaria is on the decline we have an extraordinary opportunity to totally eliminate the disease for good in Asia.
Networking with Impact, was a business networking event hosted by the British Chamber of Commerce Myanmar, in association with Yoma Strategic Holdings, to introduce our 2019 Social Impact Partner, M2030, to the businesses community in Myanmar.
M2030 have taken a unique approach to solving the world’s problems, through attempts to mobilise the corporate world to step up and fill in the gaps that the public and charity sectors cannot. M2030 aims to raise awareness around Malaria, raise funds that go directly to ‘in country’ implementing partners providing Malaria prevention and treatment, and look for creative ways to leverage the private sector; with the intention of eradicating Malaria in Asia by the year 2030.
So far in our commitment to the M2030 campaign we have raised funds through our British Ball Charity Raffle; thanks to our members $1,100 will go directly to PSI for spend on Malaria programmes in Myanmar. In 2018 PSI were able to test 698,081 people with suspected Malaria, resulting in 9,718 cases diagnosed for fast effective treatment.
We have also introduced M2030 through the networking event and communications with our members to other businesses in Myanmar who may be able to help. It isn’t always the most obvious companies who turn out to be the most useful. The cheapest and most effective way of preventing Malaria is through the use of long lasting, insecticide-treated mosquito nets. If you are a company with a large mobile workforce, or operating in remote areas you could be able to provide exactly the sort of free logistical support M2030 and partners are seeking.
If you would like to be involved with M2030 and the fight to eradicate malaria please do get in touch with the Chamber to find out more.
