Standard Chartered Myanmar donates USD 545,000 for COVID-19 emergency relief

16 June 2020, Yangon, Myanmar - Standard Chartered Myanmar has donated USD 545,000 to Red Cross and UNICEF programmes that are providing emergency relief to communities impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.

In total, USD 345,000 will be contributed to the Red Cross for the provision of urgent medical support and USD 200,000 to UNICEF for the immediate protection and education of vulnerable children.

Myanmar has been home to Standard Chartered Bank for over 150 years. As a financial institution, the Bank plays a key role in the facilitation of investment and the rejuvenation of the financial sector here. To ensure sustainable development, the Bank has also launched a range of Education and Health-related community initiatives to help stimulate economic and social growth. The COVID-19 donation reinforces the Bank's commitment to the Myanmar community and demonstrates our brand promise, Here for good.

Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers are the frontline responders, and these funds will help address some of the most urgent health and socioeconomic impacts faced by the most vulnerable people across our country. Alessandra Dentice, UNICEF Deputy Representative to Myanmar, said: “As the Government of Myanmar prepares to re-open schools across the country, the funds from Standard Chartered Myanmar will support our efforts to help children’s continuous learning in a safe, healthy and protective environment.”
